# Editing a real episode

> Tutorial 12: the working loop on a 288-shot episode: watch it through, note and flag what's wrong, turn notes into script fixes with Claude, re-render only what changed, fix by hand, and trim.

> Editing a real episode: 288 shots, fixed without watching it all again.

With hundreds of shots you never review the whole cut again. You mark what's wrong once,
in one pass, fix the words, re-render only what changed, and come back only to what you
marked. Two marks do it:

| Key | Mark | For |
| - | - | - |
| **n** | a **note**: a sentence about what's wrong | Things the script or series config should say differently: an assistant can rewrite them |
| **M** | a **flag**: a pink flag on the clip | Anything else to come back to: a new take, a prompt, a trim |

## 1. Watch it through

**1. Play all**

**Play all** in the Shots toolbar plays the cut from the top. To start elsewhere,
right-click a clip → **Play from here**.

**2. The keys**

**Space** plays and pauses; **J K L** shuttle back, pause, forward; **← →** a frame (`,`
and `.` in the viewer), **↑ ↓** a clip. **F** is full screen.

## 2. Note what's wrong

**1. Press n**

On a clip whose words need changing, press **n**. Play all pauses, and a box opens with the
shot and the take it's about.

**2. Write a sentence, Enter**

*Kell enters from the wrong side.* **Enter** saves it (Shift+Enter for a second line).
Press Space to carry on.

Each note snapshots what produced that take: the script's lines for the shot, the prompt
compiled from them, and the pictures it used. Editing the script later never rewrites it.

## 3. Flag what to come back to

**1. Press M**

On any clip to come back to, press **M**. Playback keeps going; a pink flag goes in the
clip's corner, and the count in the timeline's header goes up. **M** again unflags it.

**2. Both in one pass**

Keep going to the end: **n** for words to change, **M** for everything else.

## 4. Notes to fixes, with Claude

**1. Open the notes**

The speech bubble in the Shots toolbar shows how many notes are open; click it for the
list.

**2. Copy export**

**Copy export** puts one document on the clipboard: every note, with what made each take.

**3. Paste it to Claude**

In a Claude chat with the seriesmith script skill
([tutorial 3](https://docs.seriesmith.com/tutorials/screenplay-to-episode.md#1-get-the-script-writing-skill)), paste the
export with the script, and ask for the fixes. It edits the shots each note is about,
checks the script, and says what it changed, shot by shot, and why.

**4. Paste the fix back**

Paste the changed lines into the **Script** window (or the series config into Series
settings) and **Save**.

## 5. Re-render what changed

**1. Re-render stale**

Press **Re-render stale**. It queues only the shots whose script or pictures changed, each
at its built seed, so the new take differs by your edit and nothing else. Hover the button
for why each counts ("12 script, 3 ref"). The other shots stay as they are.

**2. Clear the notes**

Notes on re-rendered shots read **(addressed)**. Once you're happy, **Clear addressed** in
the notes list empties them.

## 6. Fix a flagged clip by hand

**1. Go to the next flag**

**Shift+M** (or click the flag count in the timeline's header) jumps to the next flagged
clip.

**2. Edit this take's prompt**

Right-click → **New take like this one…**, edit the prompt for this take (*the car has
two backs*: rewrite the sentence that describes the car), and generate. For a change that
should stay with the shot, **Inspect shot** → **Render settings** → the prompt, **Save**,
then **Generate (new seed)**.

**3. Pick and unflag**

**Use this take** on the new take, then **M** to clear the flag.

> [!TIP]
>
> **Promote** (in the Inspector) moves an override the script can say back into the script.
> Story edits (action, camera, dialogue) belong in the script, not in a prompt override.

## 7. Trim it

**1. Trim at the playhead**

Stop where the clip should start and press **i**; where it should end, **o**. Or drag a
clip's edges in the timeline, frame by frame.

**2. Reorder**

Drag a clip to move it, or **Alt+← / Alt+→**.

**3. Undo, and lock what's done**

**Ctrl+Z** undoes any cut edit (a flag too). The timeline's **Cut** menu has **Clear
trims** and **Reset order**. **Lock in the cut** (the clip's menu) freezes one you're done
with.

## The loop

**Shift+M** to the next flag → fix it → **M** to unflag → again. Only what you marked, every
pass.
