# Install to first clip

> Tutorial 1: install seriesmith one of four ways, add FastH3 Omni and Krea 2 from Features, and make your first clip.

> Install to first clip: four ways in, the models, your first clip.

From nothing to a clip made on your own PC: seriesmith installed, a video model and a
picture model downloaded, and one shot of a person in a place saying a line.

**You need:** a ComfyUI that runs (0.38 or later) on a PC with an NVIDIA GPU, or, for
the page of its own, git and Python 3.10 or later. With no GPU at all, see
[Render anywhere](https://docs.seriesmith.com/tutorials/render-anywhere.md): Comfy Cloud and Comfy Router need only a
Comfy API key.

## 1. Install seriesmith

Pick **one** of these four. All of them end in the same place: the seriesmith editor
open, either in ComfyUI's sidebar or on its own page.

**ComfyUI-Manager**

The usual way, and the one to pick if you're unsure.

**1. Make sure Manager is there**

Look for the **Manager** button in ComfyUI's top bar. A new portable ComfyUI has
Manager built in but not installed or switched on. In the portable's folder, run:

```
.\python_embeded\python.exe -m pip install -r ComfyUI\manager_requirements.txt
```

Then start ComfyUI with `--enable-manager` (add it to the end of the line in
`run_nvidia_gpu.bat`):

```
.\python_embeded\python.exe -s ComfyUI\main.py --windows-standalone-build --enable-manager
```

**2. Install the node pack**

Open **Manager → Custom Nodes Manager**, type **seriesmith** in the search box, and
press **Install** on its row.

**3. Restart ComfyUI**

When Manager asks, press **Apply Changes** (or **Restart**). Reload the browser tab
once ComfyUI is back.

**4. Check it's there**

**seriesmith Shots** and **seriesmith Refs** are in ComfyUI's left sidebar, and
**seriesmith Timeline** in the bottom panel.

**comfy-cli**

The same install as Manager's, from a terminal.

**1. Install the node pack**

```
comfy node install seriesmith
```

**2. Restart ComfyUI**

Restart it as you usually do, or start it with comfy-cli:

```
comfy launch
```

seriesmith Shots, Refs and Timeline appear as they do after a Manager install.

**A clone in custom\_nodes**

For following the newest changes on GitHub.

**1. Clone it into custom\_nodes**

From your ComfyUI folder:

```
cd ComfyUI\custom_nodes
git clone https://github.com/bgstratt/seriesmith.git
```

**2. Optional: its two packages**

Comfy's SDK (for Comfy Cloud and Router) and imageio-ffmpeg (an ffmpeg) are what a
Manager install would add. Put them in with **ComfyUI's own Python**; on the portable
build, from `custom_nodes`:

```
..\..\python_embeded\python.exe -m pip install -r seriesmith\requirements.txt
```

You can skip this: Settings gives the SDK command when you set a Comfy API key, and
Features can download a full ffmpeg.

**3. Restart ComfyUI**

seriesmith Shots, Refs and Timeline appear. Later, `git pull` in
`custom_nodes\seriesmith` updates it (restart ComfyUI after).

**A page of its own**

The editor in a browser tab of its own, beside a ComfyUI, pointed at one on another PC,
or with no ComfyUI at all (Comfy's cloud only).

**1. Clone it anywhere**

```
git clone https://github.com/bgstratt/seriesmith.git C:\code\seriesmith
```

Installed from Manager already? Skip this: the same launcher is in
`custom_nodes\seriesmith`.

**2. Start it**

Double-click **`run_seriesmith.bat`** in that folder, or from a terminal:

```
cd C:\code\seriesmith
run_seriesmith.bat
```

On Linux or macOS it's `./run_seriesmith.sh`. `run_seriesmith_ext.bat` opens it to
your home network too. The first start sets itself up in the folder's `.venv`,
which takes a minute or two.

**3. The editor opens**

Your browser opens the editor at [http://127.0.0.1:8190](http://127.0.0.1:8190).

**4. Point it at where shots render**

Open **Settings** (top right). With ComfyUI running on this PC there is nothing to
set. For a ComfyUI elsewhere, set its address under **ComfyUI**. With no ComfyUI,
paste a **Comfy API key** (from platform.comfy.org): shots then render on Comfy
Cloud and the hosted models through Comfy Router, billed to that account.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Rendering only on Comfy Router? Skip step 2 below (it downloads models to a local
> ComfyUI) and go straight to step 3, picking a Router model in **Model**.

## 2. Add the two models

FastH3 Omni makes the video (MiniMax H3 distilled to 8 steps: a 3-second take is about a
minute) and Krea 2 makes the pictures (6 to 10 seconds each). Both are just model files: no
other node packs, no LoRAs.

**1. Open Features**

**Settings → Features…**. It lists what this install can add, grouped: video and picture
models, voices, upscaling, post-processing and more. Each has a status: **Installed**,
**Partly installed** or **Not installed**.

**2. Tick FastH3 Omni and Krea 2**

FastH3 Omni is under the video models, Krea 2 under the picture models. The chevron on
a row lists its files, the folder each goes in and its size; the foot adds up what the
ticked features will download.

**3. Install**

Press **Install**. The card on top follows each download and has **Stop** (a stopped
download resumes next time). The files go into ComfyUI's own models folders.

**4. Wait for Installed**

Both rows read **Installed**. If these are the only models on the machine, they are now
its defaults (Krea 2 for pictures, FastH3 Omni for video), so there is nothing else to set.

> [!TIP]
>
> Already have other models? seriesmith picks the first one installed in its own order
> (MiniMax H3 Ref2VA before FastH3 Omni, for example). Choose one yourself in **Settings →
> Video model** and **Picture model**, or per clip with **Model** in Simple mode. A model
> that isn't ready has a **What's missing** button listing each file and where it goes.

## 3. Make your first clip

**1. Open Simple mode**

Open **seriesmith Shots** in ComfyUI's sidebar (or the page of its own) and choose
**Simple** at the top. The sidebar becomes one **Make** panel.

**2. Start a project of its own (recommended)**

The panel's title is the project. Open its dropdown → **Browse and add new…** → **New
series/project…**, and give it a name (*First clip*). Its clips, people and places stay
together in a folder of its own. You can also just use the **Clips** project that's
there already.

**3. Choose A clip**

Pick **A clip** (the others are **A picture**, **Several shots** and **A series…**).

**4. Create the person**

Under **Who**, press **+ Create**. Give a name, *Mara*, and what she looks like:

```
a lighthouse keeper in her sixties, grey braid, yellow oilskin coat, weathered face
```

Leave the picture empty and press **Add**. Her picture is made from those words on
Krea 2: four views of her (three-quarter, side, back and face), so she looks the same in
every shot. She is now in **Who**.

**5. Create the place**

Under **Where**, press **+ Create**. Name it *Lighthouse gallery* and describe it:

```
the iron gallery around a lighthouse lamp at dusk, storm clouds over a dark sea
```

Its picture (the place's **plate**) is made there and then, and the place becomes this
clip's **Where**. Both are kept for the next clip.

**6. Say what happens**

In **What happens?**, describe the shot as you would to a camera crew: who does what,
in the present tense.

```
Mara wipes rain off the lamp's glass, then turns to look out to sea as a ship's horn sounds in the distance.
```

**7. Give her a line**

Under **Said**, type her line under her name: *There you are.*

**8. Set the length, framing and size**

**Length** 3 (seconds; **lengths** beside it lists what suits what), **Framing**
medium, and leave **Size** at the project's.

**9. Generate**

Press **Generate**. Anything the clip still needs (Mara's views, the place's plate) is
made first, on the same queue, then the take. One press does both. On FastH3 Omni the
take takes about a minute; **Jobs** in the top bar shows where it is.

**10. Play it**

The clip is under **Your clips**, newest first. Click it to play its take in the viewer:
her face, the place, her line.

A clip is one shot. Underneath, a Simple project is an ordinary episode, and each clip is
a shot of it, so everything in Advanced works on it too.
